| | World Disability Day: Police detain protesting persons with disabilities | | | SRINAGAR, Dec 3: Over two dozen members of the All Jammu and Kashmir Handicapped Association were detained by police during a protest march here on the occasion of World Disability Day. Earlier a sensitization rally was organised by Aapa Institute of Inclusive Education Bijbehara at press enclave that aimed at making people aware to protect the rights of persons with disabilities. The police stopped their rally and took dozens into custody, while children were set free. Members of these associations told reporters that they were protesting against the non-serious approach of the state government in addressing the genuine problems of persons with disabilities. “So far the accessibility to foot paths, transport, government buildings, courts, hospitals, schools, mosques, shrines, bus terminals etc is a myth for persons with disabilities,” Javed Ahmad Tak, honorary chairman Humanity Welfare Orgnaisation Helpline told Kashmir Times. He observed that there are social barriers stereotypes, stigmas linked to persons with disabilities because of the lack of accessibility. “The persons with disabilities remain confined to four walls. Persons with different disabilities are getting appropriate environment in other parts of the country but here in Jammu and Kashmir are being discriminated,” Tak remarked. The protesting members of these associations accused the state government of failing to implement schemes even after the funds have been released by the central government. Some protesting persons with disabilities demanded introduction of Braille education system from primary to university level in the state, reservations in government jobs, enhancement of monthly pension, concessions in payments of revenue to the government, setting up of a handicapped advisory board, and providing prosthesis aid and artificial limbs. |
