| | Sectarian clashes ‘attempt to divide society’: Geelani | | | SRINAGAR, Dec 6: The Chairman Hurriyat Conference (G), Syed Ali Shah Geelani, today termed the recent clashes in old city as a “deliberate attempt to divide Kashmiri Muslims” even as he criticised the state government for thwarting his ‘peace march’. “Conspiracy is being hatched at the international level to weaken the unity of Muslims,” he told media in a press conference at his Hyderpora residence this forenoon. “The recent sectarian clashes were a part of the plans to divide Kashmiri Muslims, and weaken the resistance movement.” The allegations followed the sectarian clashes in the old city here, which lead to imposition of curfew in most parts of Srinagar for nearly a week. The entire separatist camp in Kashmir described it as a “handy work of the agencies”, and criticised the state for placing most parts of the city under curfew. Appealing people for calm, the 82-year-old leader said that Kashmiri Muslims should show unity, irrespective of their sects. This is not the first time when Geelani has accused the agencies of trying to divide the society into sects and groups. Earlier this year, he termed it a ploy to divert the attention from over the Kashmir issue. And, subsequently, he called a meeting of Ulemas and religious scholars at his residence, but the police did not let it happen. Geelani claimed that Hurriyat (G) conglomerate has been attempting to reduce the conflict between sects in the society, and that “during last few months we have achieved substantial success in this regard.” Criticising the state for foiling his ‘peace march’, he said: “The government had no justification to stop the peace march. We wanted to make peace between the groups, but governments move is giving rise to more rumours and speculations. I don’t carry guns, grenades and bombs with me.” Sharply reacting to Supreme Court’s directive to state government for widening of the road to Amarnath Cave Shrine, the conglomerate also distributed a pamphlet titled ‘Lamha Fikraya’ (Moment of Concern) displaying the photographs about the construction material on the road. As per the pamphlet, Hurriyat has a four-point demand: Management of the yatra by the Kashmiri pundits; limiting yatra to 15 days; limiting the number of yatris; and suspending the plans for broadening and concretization of the Amarnath road. “‘Lamha fikreyah’ has been prepared after a Hurriyat (G) team visited Sheeshnag and conducted a survey of the area,” he said. |
