| | December Shame | | | Dear editor, The month of December has a shameful significance in the world’s greatest democracy, where two big tragedies took place this month. The first one was the biggest industrial disaster in Bhopal on the night of 2nd December, 1984 that took away lives of 10,000 people and till date 500,000 people are still sufferers. Whoever breathed the killer methyl isocynide died on the same night; whether animals or human beings. People of Bhopal blame Bhopal police for letting Warren Anderson (Chairman of Union Carbide, Now Dow Chemicals), go scot free and he was carried away safely to Bhopal airport. A pittance was given in the form of compensation after huge demonstrations and protest agitations, but justice is still delayed and denied. People are still claiming and crying for the compensation and for removing the debris of chemical gas plant, which is still present there from the last 28 years. Secondly, was the demolition of Babri masjid on Dec 6, 1992, which was a conspiracy of Hindutva politics to grab power, by hurting the sentiments of the biggest minority in our country. How can they feel safe in a country, where their supreme sacred place was used for vote politics? The demolition led to communal riots all over the country. Both these events represent grave betrayal with the people and reveals that the country is run by few from a particular class background. Already there is a trust deficit between the rulers and the public. If such things continue to happen, then the so-called Democracy will no more be democracy, it would apparently be facist regime. —Ranjna Charak, jansavteena@gmail.com |
