| | Begum Samnani passes away | | | JAMMU: Dec 7: Begum Sughra Salma Samnani, former member Legislative Council and owner and publisher of Urdu daily Sandesh passed away at 2.30 PM today after prolonged illness.
She was 86 and is survived by three daughters and grandchildren, Her eldest daughter Tasneem Jaffrey and son-in-law Mushtaq Jaffery were on her bedside when she breathed her last.
The burial, according to family sources, will take place tomorrow at 4 PM at Rehari burial ground.
Wife of late Syed Nazir Hussain Samnani, freedom fighter, veteran journalist, founder of Daily Sandesh and former member of Lok Sabha and State Legislative Council, Sughra Salma Samnani was born on May 15,1925 at Sialkot.
Begum Samnani played an active role in the National Conference right from 1945 when her husband joined the party and was the general secretary of the Provincial National Conference in Jammu,
During the communal riots and tribal raids in 1947, Begum Samnani played a key role for the rehabilitation of the Muslim families displaced due to the communal violence in Jammu. She also worked for the rehabilitation of Hindus and Sikhs who migrated to Jammu from the areas under Pakistani control. She also joined her husband and other NC leaders and workers in the task of the recovery and rehabilitation of women and victims of communal holocaust.
As one of the few active woman activists of the NC she worked hard to strength the organization at the grass root levels in Jammu, She was also associated with the cooperative and trade union movements.
Known for her commitment to secularism and socialism, Begum Samnani had endeared herself to the people from all walks of life and belonging to different religions and regions.
Begum Samnani took over the ownership and editorship of Daily Sandesh after the death of her illustrious husband in 1972. She was also elected to the State Legislative Council in 1972 after the sudden death of her husband Syed Nazir Samnani, against the seat vacated by him. Nazir Samnani had died while speaking in the Legislative Council and pleading the cause of poorer sections of the people. Even after her husband’s death, Begum Samnani continued to work as a political and social activist, and served the cause of deprived sections of the society and in strengthening communal harmony and peace in the region.
Her death has been widely mourned by all sections of people belonging to different communities. |
