| | Valley under severe cold; snow, rain likely | | | SRINAGAR, Dec 7: The valley is under the grip of cold with the maximum temperature dipping to 7.4 degree Celsius and a night temperature as low as minus 1.8. The weather today remained cold and hazy but dry. The sun did not come out the whole day here, and cold breeze was blowing in most parts of the valley. “Last night, temperature in Srinagar dipped to minus 1.8 degree Celsius while the temperature on Wednesday night was minus 1.9. Temperature at most places in Kashmir is running below freezing point,” the officials at meteorological department said. For last one month, the Valley has been under the grip of severe cold. During past few weeks, the visibility in mornings and evenings has been low due to fog. The weather department has predicted rain and snow for the coming days. “The light rainfall or snowfall will occur at the isolated places in the Kashmir division. The cold and the chilly winds blowing during the daytime will continue,” the officials said. The people of the valley are busy in buying the essential commodities for winter. There is huge rush in the markets with people shopping for warm clothes, jackets and dried vegetables. “The early nip in the air has increased the demand for woolen garments. We sell three to four jackets per day. Stock of the jackets has already finished,” Tariq, who sells woolen garments at Lalchowk, said. “We are doing fine Alhamdulillah,” he added. Meanwhile, the dry spell is resulting in an increase in common ailments like cough, cold and respiratory problems, particularly among children and elderly. “This dry season has much effect on the children and the elderly persons who can become infected to severe viral infections and respiratory problem,” Dr S Muhammad Salim Khan of Social and Preventive Medicine department at Government Medical College here said. |
