Militant killed in Hathlangoo encounter: Police

SRINAGAR, May 18: An unidentified militant was killed during brief encounter with government forces at Hathlangoo area of Sopore town in north Kashmir’s Baramulla District, police said today.
A police spokesman in a statement said that a militant was killed in a brief exchange of fire after joint team of 22 Rashtriya Rifles and police laid cordon and search operation at Hatlangoo village in north Kashmir.
High speed mobile internet service was suspended in Sopore town and the areas adjoining it as a precautionary measure.
Elaborating, the spokesman said the militants fire indiscriminately as soon as the joint search party zeroed in into the suspected place triggering brief encounter between the two sides.
He said that one militant was killed during brief encounter whose body was later recovered along with huge cache of arms and ammunition from the site of encounter. He, however, said that the identity of slain militant is yet to be ascertained. The spokesman further said no collateral damage was reported during the encounter.
“Incriminating material including arms and ammunition were recovered from the encounter site. It was a clean operation and no collateral damage took place during the exchange of fire,” he added.
The official also appealed people to cooperate with police and refrain from visiting the encounter site till the area is properly sanitized from unexploded shells.
