| | 61st All India Police Hockey Championship: Gurjeet helps J&K hold Uttrakhand draw, enters QFs | | | JAMMU, Dec 10: Converting three consecutive penalty corners into goal, the star striker, Gurjeet Singh not only helped the side hold Uttrakhand 3-3 draw but guided J&K Police to quarterfinals of the ongoing 61st All India Police Hockey Championship at K K Hakhu Stadium, here today. Trailing by three goals, J&K Police fought from behind converting three of the six penalty corners awarded to them in the second half of the play to make it to the quarterfinals stages, considering the goal average. Earlier, conceding two goals in the first half of the play, host J&K Police had lost hopes of recovering from the early jolt. However, it was Gurjeet who spearhead brought back the team into the match in the remaining 20 minutes of the game. It was due to change in the strategy to initiate moves instead of launching a direct attack paid dividends the hosts. As many as five penalty corners were awarded in favour of J&K. The first two chances were wasted by the penalty corner experts. It was only after Gurjeet took the center stage and successfully converted three back to back penalty corners into goal to make it a 3-3 draw. The high voltage contest ended with J&K Police missing out on another goal chance that came their way two minute before the final hotter was sounded. This time the move was foiled by the Uttrakhand goal-keeper. From Uttrakhand, Manoj Singh scored two goals while Pankaj Kumar added one goal. Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Police also made it to the quarterfinals from group-A after Haryana lost to ITBP in the league tie today. Earlier, the SSB, Chattisgarh and Maharashtra defeated their opponents in one-sided contests while ITBP faced a tough contest before they overpowered Haryana 4-3. ADGP Law and Order , Armed K Rajendra Kumar was the chief guest on the occasion. He was accompanied by DIGs Johny Willam and T Punchok, Commandant MS Punoo and other senior officers. The matches were officiated by the penal of technical officials including Virender Kumar, Vijay Kishore, Jagit Singh Reen, Imtiaz-ud-Din, VP Sharma, Tabrez Sher, Anil Kumar, Naveed Zia, Mohd Ameen and Sanjay Bhatia.
