SRINAGAR, June 17: Six army men and two civilians were injured in an improvised explosive device (IED) blast at Aarihal village in Pulwama district this evening, police said.
However, the unofficial reports put the number of injured army men at 9.
Reports said that the incident occurred around 6.00 PM when an armoured vehicle of army was on move and attacked with an IED explosion by militants at Aarihal. The reports added that militants had used a vehicle fitted with IED to trigger the blast.
Soon after the blast, militants fired upon the vehicle, the official said, adding that the army men also returned the fire. “Initial reports reveal that the vehicle suffered extensive damage,” the official added.
The injured army men, according to the official, were immediately rushed to army’s 92 Base Hospital in Srinagar.
Local residents said that they heard a loud bang of the blast followed by firing, which triggered panic in the area.
Soon after the incident, additional reinforcements of the army, police and SOG rushed to the spot and launched a massive search operation to nab the attackers.
A police spokesman in a statement said, “As per the reports received, in Arihal area of Pulwama, one mobile patrol vehicle of Army moving through the area suffered damages due to an explosion.”
“Area has been taken into cordon and search in the area is going on,” said the spokesman.
“Six Army men have sustained injuries in the incident and are stated to be stable,” he said.
“Moreover two civilians also sustained injuries due to this explosion. They were evacuated to hospital by the soldiers and are undergoing treatment,” he added.
“Police has registered a case and is investigating the circumstances of this crime,” said the spokesman.
Srinagar-based defence spokesperson Col Rajesh Kalia said in a statement, “A failed attempt was made to attack a mobile vehicle patrol of 44 RR with a vehicle-based IED while the army patrol was moving in the general area Arihal in district Pulwama today evening.”
He said, “Troops all safe. Few minor injuries. Reports of attack on Army convoy are unfounded and baseless. Area cordoned and search operations in progress.”
“The damage was minimised due to the alertness of the patrol party. It is a hardened ALS and not Casspir,” said the spokesman.
