Woman dies due to ‘negligence’ of doctors in Anantnag

ANANTNAG, June 26: A 25-year old pregnant woman died due to the alleged negligence of doctors at maternity and child hospital (MCH) Anantnag Tuesday night.
Shobi Jan, a resident of Sarnal locality of Anantnag, was admitted in the hospital on Tuesday morning (June 25) after she developed labour pain. After examining the patient the doctors told the family that she will deliver normally.
However, in the evening the patient, according to her family members, complained of severe pain.
"After the patient started writhing in pain we went to the para-medics on night duty and asked them to get a doctor. But till 11.00 PM no doctor came to see her. We virtually begged before them but they were unmoved. Later after realizing that the patient has developed complicacy, the para-medics called a doctor who took her to the labour room," family members of the women said.
After the patient was taken to the labour room, family members said, they were allowed to see her.
"At around 3.00 AM in the morning the doctors shifted her to operation and kept door closed for hours without informing us about the condition of the patient," the family members said.
It was around 6.00 AM in the morning that the doctors opened the door of the theater that too after the police team had arrived at the spot.
Later at around 10.00 AM in the morning, scores of relatives of the woman held strong protests in the hospital premises. They alleged that the negligence of doctors led to the death of the patient. "They made the patient to wait till mid night when her conditioned had worsened. It was a murder and we demand action against the doctors involved," the protesting family members and relatives said.
Some of the angry relatives of the woman also ransacked the portion of hospital and office of the medical superintendent, Dr M Y Zagoo.
The protest in the hospital ended only after the hospital authorities called the police.
Medical superintendent of the hospital did not respond to calls from this correspondent. However, an official posted in the hospital said that a team consisting of two senior gynecologists was constituted to probe the matter.
"They have been asked to submit the report as soon as possible," the official said.
He, however, said that they have also filed an application for registration of FIR against the people who carried out ransacking of the hospital.
Police has also taken cognizance of the incident and have started investigations.
"We are investigating the matter," a police official said.
