Ashantha de Mel may be retained: sports minister in favour of two younger selectors

MUMBAI, Aug 1: Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is likely to name two new selectors very soon, it is learnt here.
According to the sources in Colombo, the sports minister Harin Fernando is scheduled to meet the SLC Ex-co members on Friday at 2.00 pm and names of the two new selectors are likely to be discussed.
"Most probably will retain Ashantha de Mel and one more from the existing panel of four selectors and include two new selectors", the source further added.
In fact, the term of the present four selectors (Ashantha de Mel, Chamila Mendis, Brendon Kurrupu and Hemantha Wickramaratne) who were approved by Fernando's predecessor runs till November. None of these four are the full time selectors.
"The minister is in favour of having two "young" selectors, who can well and better understand the mindset of the players", the source further added.
It is still not clear whether the Test team for the home series against New Zealand would be picked by the new set of selectors.
The present four national selectors are / were scheduled to meet on Friday for the extensive talks for the discussions on Emerging team for the Bangladesh team and finalized on or before the senior team for the Tests against visiting New Zealand.
