Pak violates ceasefire in Rajouri

SRINAGAR/RAJOURI, Aug 6: Indian army Tuesday claimed to have foiled a major infiltration attempt on the border with Pakistan in the Machhal sector of Kupwara district in the early hours of Tuesday. One soldier was also injured in the exchange of fire between the infiltrators and the army.
In the meanwhile, Pakistani army also violated ceasefire in Sunderbani sector of Rajouri district this afternoon.
A defence spokesperson said, “Around five to six terrorists infiltrated 500 meters into the Indian Territory around 2:30 AM today. A soldier was injured in the initial exchange of firing with the terrorists who were trying to sneak into the valley from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) through Machhal sector. The group had sneaked about 500 metres inside the Indian territory when it was confronted by the alert troops, leading to a gunfight.” The injured soldier has been evacuated and is in stable condition, he said.
The development comes even as General Officer Commanding in Chief, Northern Command Lt Gen Ranbir Singh chaired a meeting of the Core Group of Intelligence and Security agencies to review the “operational readiness in Jammu and Kashmir.”
In the meanwhile, Pakistani army violated ceasefire in Sunderbani sector of Rajouri district today at about 1245 hours. Pakistan initiated ceasefire violation by firing of small arms and shelling with mortars in Sunderbani Sector, Rajouri. Indian Army retaliated befittingly. The firing stopped at 1430 hours.
However, there was no immediate report of any casualty in the Pakistani firing which was unprovoked, officials said.
This was the second ceasefire violation along the LoC in the past four days. On August 3, Pakistan targetted Mehdhar sector of Poonch. Last month, two army personnel and a 10-day-old baby were killed and several civilians injured in heavy Pakistani shelling and firing in the twin districts of Poonch and Rajouri in Jammu region.
