Anti-militancy operations resume on small scale

SRINAGAR, Sep 30: Killing of three militants during a cordon and search operation in Ganderbal on September 28 marked the beginning of anti-militancy operations in Kashmir, which had almost come to a halt since August 5 due to restrictions and continuous shutdown.
National security advisor Ajit Doval who was recently on a two day visit to Kashmir directed the security forces and police to resume anti militancy operations. Last month the security forces had killed two militants in an encounter in Baramulla.
Officials said that due to the present situation, operations may not be conducted this time on such large scale as compared to those being conducted in the past, but a beginning has been made. Officials said that over 60 militants have managed to cross over LoC since last month. The Pakistani troops are resorting to heavy shelling across LoC to push more and more militants in Valley before the passes on the high mountains along LoC get closed after snowfall.
The officials said that while most of the infiltration bids were foiled since August but a number of militants managed to infiltrate. Troops remained particularly busy in Gulmarg sector for days together during their operation.
Meanwhile, thousands of troops which have been arriving here since August are busy strengthening the security grid on ground level amid mounting tension on borders. Some reports said that nearly 500 new security bunkers have been set up in the Valley particularly in Srinagar city. The number of security check points on the roads is also increasing with every passing day. The vehicles are stopped and searched on these check points.
Officials said that the bunkers are being constructed due to new security requirements and to deal with the militants who infiltrate from across the border or local militants. Abrogation of Articles 370 and 35 A and division of state into two union territories has thrown new challenges to security apparatus.
Carrying out anti-militancy on the same scale as before August is not practically possible right now given the volatile ground situation. With mobile phone connectivity suspended, the mobile phone link between security agencies and their informers is also affected and timely information is unavailable mostly.
However, reports of cordon and search operations on small scale have started pouring in from different parts of Valley.
