3 militants killed in Shopian encounter

Major success for security forces: DGP

SRINAGAR, Jan 20: Director General of Police (DGP), Dilbagh Singh today termed the elimination of three Hizb militants including a top commander in south Kashmir’s Shopian as a major success for security forces, saying that whoever challenges the country’s sovereignty will bear the brunt, be it a DySP or deserted cop.
Addressing the media at Police Control Room (PCR), Singh who was flanked by IGP Kashmir and DIG Central Kashmir said that three militants have been killed by the security forces during an encounter in Wachi Zainapora area in Shopian.
He said that killing of three militants in Shopian is a major success for security forces and such operations will continue in future as well. DGP said whoever challenges sovereignty of India will face the music be it a DySP or a deserted cop.
He identified the slain militants as Waseem Wani, a local Hizb Commander, who joined militant ranks in 2017, and Adil Bashir Sheikh, a deserted SPO, who decamped with seven AK-47 rifles and pistol from official residence of a former PDP MLA in 2018. He however said the identity of another militant is yet to be ascertained.
DGP said there were nineteen cases registered against Wani which include killing of four civilians and four police men in the vicinity. Those killed by Wani are Gowhar Ahmad Dar, Nadeem Manzoor, Ilyas Khan and Zahid Khan.
The UT police chief said the deserted SPO Adil Bashir joined militancy in 2018 after decamping with seven AK-47 rifles and a pistol from former PDP MLA’s official residence.
DGP said 2020 begun with successful operations in which a top militant commander Hamad Khan along with his two associates was arrested by the police “This year began with arrest of Naveed Babu and Davinder Singh as well. We successfully busted two militant hideouts in Pulwama also,” he said.
He also said that CASO has been intensified in south Kashmir and the exercise will continue in the future as well. Singh said that the case of arrested DySP, Davinder Singh has been taken over by National Investigation Agency (NIA) “I can’t say much about him as the case will be probed by NIA.”
On his frequent visit to Bangladesh, the DGP said he used to visit his two daughters in Bangladesh who are studying there.
