NEW DELHI, Feb 15: Justice Satyaranjan C Dharmadhikari, the most senior judge after the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, abruptly resigned on Friday in the open court instead of accepting his transfer to Odisha as the Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court.
He was expecting his elevation as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court since after Justice Ms V K Tahilramani's elevation as the chief justice of Madras High Court but that was blocked because of "certain developments" not known to him. He abruptly resigned when told that he was being moved to Odisha as the Chief Justice.
A report says Dharmadhikari stated in his chamber after announcing his resignation in the open court that he did not want to go to Odisha. He was quoted saying that "the place is new, people are different, work culture is different, and you need at least six to eight months to settle down at a new place."
Coming from a family of lawyers, Dharmadhikari was a Mumbai man. Joining practice as a lawyer in 1983, he was elevated to the Bombay High Court in November 2003. He had another two years to superannuate on January 26, 2022.
