Booth criticises Houghton's comments
NEW DELHI, Jul 3 (UNI): Mahindra United coach David Boothhas lashed out at Bob Houghton for his adverse comments onthe current situation in Indian football.
Houghton, at present in Dubai with the Indian team, has voiced his displeasure at the manner in which the game is being run in the country.
The widely travelled Englishman has also been critical of the I-League clubs as well, but Booth feels the criticism is uncalled for.
"It's easy to just sit back and blame but to do that, you got to have a solution first. I can't think of anything other than a multi-millionaire putting some money in Indian football," Booth said.
"For the whole thing to come together, finance is the key word. The Indian FA must generate money, get sponsorship from somewhere.
"There are so many fans who watch East Bengal games but the clubs don't generate revenues from the supporters here," he added.
The former Mumbai FC coach further stated that in order to improve the standard of Indian football, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and the I-League clubs will have to put in a combined effort.
"To be fair, we'll have to do it together," the 60-year-old from England was quoted as saying by 'Goal.com'.
Lamenting the lack of exciting new talent in the domestic game Booth said,"It's not exciting as there are no young stars coming through."
Criticising the selection policy for the Indian team, Booth urged Houghton to experiment with fresh talent instead of sticking to the same set of players.
"How many young players have been included in the national squad. Nobody is making room at the top. What after 2011?
"If I am an Indian player, then practically, I have no chance to enter the national team set-up as in the last six to seven tournaments; it's been the same set of players chosen," he pointed out. "There has to be a progression."

No genuine talent in Indian team, reckons Miandad
NEW DELHI, Jul 3 (UNI): Former Pakistan captain Javed Miandad has expressed serious concerns about the skills of the famed Indian batting line-up and claimed that none of the upcoming youngsters in the team, possess talent to play the Test cricket.
The legendary batsman said while youngsters with the likes of Yousuf Pathan, Suresh Raina and Rohit Sharma are 'superb' players of Twenty20 cricket but added that they still have a long way to go before they really prove themselves in Test and ODIs.
"These batsmen have a lot of talent but I think the teams have spotted their weaknesses and life would not be all that rosy anymore. I'm sorry but I don't see any genuine talent coming out of the Indian team," Miandad said.
His concerns were drawn from the fact that the most of the youngsters, who form the Indian batting line-up, haven't played a single Test which underlines their lack of ability to play in trying conditions.
"When you are drawn into playing so much Twenty20 and ODI cricket, you lose your touch and art of true batsmanship.
"The best batsmen in the world played Test cricket before any other format and that's what is not happening in today's age," Miandad told cricketnirvana.
He opined that India has produced some of the best batsmen that the world has ever seen, all of whom have proved their mettle in Tests.
"When you have a history of batsmen like Vijay Hazare, Sunil Gavaskar, Gundappa Vishwanath, Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid, it is a worrying aspect that the youngsters coming through are not carrying the glorious tradition of Indian batting," he added.
However, Miandad, who is Director General of the PakistanCricket Board (PCB), has reasons to point out which have led to the downfall in the quality of the batting.
He blamed the emergence of IPL and other such Twenty20 leagues which have hampered the batsmen's ability to succeed in Tests.
"These days the youngsters, not just in India but also in Pakistan and other parts are more concerned about scoring brisk runs and don't seem to have the required temperament and ability needed to succeed in Test cricket.
"The IPL will destroy everything that is pure about the game. Batsmen don't play straight batted shots like before and bowlers have forgotten to swing the ball," he opined.

Muralitharan out of first test against Pakistan
GALLE, Sri Lanka, Jul 3 (Reuters): Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan will miss the first test against Pakistan due to a knee injury.
Muralitharan, who holds the record for the most test wickets, has injured his patella tendon and will require two-to-three weeks rest.
The off-spinner suffered the injury while fielding on Wednesday and the decision was made after scans revealed a slight tear.
"I was hoping to play but when (team physio) Tommy Simsek saw the scans we realised I needed to rest," Muralitharan told Reuters.
Muralitharan could return for the third and final test but it is more likely he will target their one-day series or a series against New Zealand starting in August.
Selectors have called up off-spinner Suraj Kaluhalamulla (formerly known as Suraj Mohamed) and left-arm spinner Rangana Herath as cover for the opening test, which starts tomorrow.
Herath has been rushed back to Sri Lanka from England where he was playing club cricket while Mohamed took three wickets against Pakistan in a warm-up game this week.

Apologetic Nazir cleared for Pakistan duty
KARACHI, Jul 3 (Reuters): Pakistan opener Imran Nazir has been cleared for national duty again after apologising for his outburst in adomestic tournament, the cricket board said today.
The 27-year-old batsman is expected to return for the one-day series in Sri Lanka starting on July 30, after he was punished for misconduct during a Twenty20 tournament final in Lahore.
Nazir, who quit the unofficial Indian Cricket League, had still been ignored for last month's successful Twenty20 World Cup campaign and the Sri Lanka test series which starts tomorrow.
"Nazir had submitted a written apology for his behaviour and the board chairman has now pardoned him. He can now be considered for selection," a board spokesman said.

Qadir to appear before Sports Standing Committee on Jul 14
LAHORE, Jul 3 (UNI): The Standing Committee of the National Assembly on Sports has summoned former chief selector Abdul Qadir for a hearing on July 14.
Former leg-spinner Qadir has resigned from the post of Pakistan's chief selector during the Twenty20 World Cup, and has alleged Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) officials of interfering in his work.
The Committee will also discuss the dissolution of the national senior and junior selection committees by the Board Chairman Ejaz Butt and performance of the PCB officials.
"What can I say on the performance of the Board. It is before everyone and everyone is worried and has pointed out flaws. What more can I add to this," sports minister Aftab Shah Jillani said today.
However, Jillani refused to make comment on the PCB affairs asserting that he was trying to control the situations and improve the work culture.
"I was offered the post of PCB Chairman but I turned it down. I don't want to hold any position in the Board. But definitely I would like to see improvement in its working.
"Hopefully when the new constitution is implemented it will reduce discretionary powers of the Chairman and give more authority to the governing council members," he said.

Racing expert returns to India after six months
BANGALORE, July 3 (UNI): Indian Racing expert Karun Chandhok had returned to India after six months.
The Chennai-born driver, who now lives in the United Kingdom, is on a whirlwind tour of the country, meeting sponsors and fans after getting his first podium of the year at Silverstone last time.
Commenting on the season so far, Karun told UNI that 'it has been a busy season especially, since he is with a new team, 'Ocean Racing Technology' from this year. "I have been more involved in moulding the way, the team functions and the technical set-ups of the car than before and it is a challenge that I am relishing," he added.
Chandhok's third place finish was the first time a Portuguese team has recorded a podium finish in a major motorsport championship, which has created waves in their home country.
Reviewing the races gone by, Karun said, losing a guaranteed win in Monaco was painful, but by getting fastest lap in Istanbul and then getting on the podium in Silverstone, he would like to prove his mettle in in Formula 1, if he gets an opportunity in the next season.

Suits row refuses to sink ahead of worlds
MILAN, Jul 3 (Reuters): If swimming fans thought the row over revolutionary bodysuits was over, they can think again.
Top male swimmers are so frustrated by the controversy that they are even threatening to whip out their old trunks and trail in last if it means they keep their credibility.
Last month, swimming's world governing body FINA approved the new costumes after months of wrangling to try to create some clarity ahead of the Rome world championships, which start in three weeks.
Arguments over the suits, which have contributed to more than 100 world records in the past 18 months, have, however, intensified rather than died down since FINA's decision.
"It highlights the sport, these world records, but it's not good for the sport. It's become about the suit rather than the swimmer now," Britain's former multiple world-record holder Mark Foster told Reuters.
"These suits are going to help the not-so-good swimmers because they help them float better. But the better swimmers float better themselves, they've got a lot better technique and core stability.
"It's making the not-so-good swimmers better swimmers." At the heart of the controversy are new suits which are covered with polyurethane to aid buoyancy. The old suits had only polyurethane plates.

Kim hopes record-setting performance signals turnaround
BETHESDA, Maryland, Jul 3 (Reuters): Anthony Kim sizzled to a course record at the AT&T National on Thursday and hoped his display signalled a turnaround after a season of frustration.
Holder Kim fired a flawless eight-under-par 62 to take the first-round lead at Congressional Country Club in the Tiger Woods-hosted tournament outside Washington, D C yesterday.
"Whenever you can make a bunch of birdies and not bogeys to follow it up, it's going to be a good day," the 24-year-old told reporters after grabbing a two-stroke lead over fellow Americans Woods, DA Points and Bryce Molder.
"Fortunately I kept the ball in play for most of the day and finally got some putts to fall."
Kim's 2009 PGA Tour campaign has been hampered by a series of injuries, including a nagging thumb sprain. He has not cracked the top 10 since tying for second at the season-opening Mercedes-Benz Championship in January.
"Just because I shot 62 doesn't take away that bitter taste in my mouth when I'm not contending for tournaments, and that's what everyone out here works for," he said.
"It's awful when you come out here and finish 20th and 30th and 50th. I've been lucky to finish 50th a couple times this year.
"But I'm finally getting to that point where I feel I'm going to be able to win every time I tee it up. It's not going to take anything crazy, it's just going to take solid golf."

Kim shoots record 62, Woods lurks two shots behind
BETHESDA, Jul 3 (Reuters): Holder Anthony Kim fired a course-record, eight-under-par 62 to upstage tournament host Tiger Woods in the opening round of the 6 million dollars AT&T National at Congressional Country Club.
The 24-year-old California native registered eight birdies in a flawless display to hold a two-shot lead over fellow Americans Woods, A Points and Bryce Molder yesterday.
"This golf course fits my eye and when I hit it wide I seem to get lucky out here," Kim told reporters after taking advantage of ideal scoring conditions.
"I love coming back to a course I have good feelings about and obviously playing well last year helped. I'm starting to see the break on these greens pretty well."
World number one Woods, a double winner on the 2009 PGA Tour, recorded seven birdies and one bogey on the pristine 7,255-yard course near Washington, DC.
"I've always enjoyed being a selfish host, and that's winning the event," Woods said, flashing a broad smile. "I've done that in LA at the Chevron World Challenge a few times, and hopefully I can do it this week."
Woods said he was not surprised to see Kim leading."He's got so much talent, it's just a matter of time before he turns it around," said the 14-times major winner. "He came back to a site that he feels comfortable at, and he's played well here in the past. There's a lot to be said for that."

Venus set on path to success by Serena
LONDON, Jul 3(Agencies): A display of raw desire over a decade ago from sister Serena inspired Venus Williams to ascend the summit of the women's game but there will be no room for sentiment when the siblings meet for the fourth time in a Wimbledon final on Saturday.
As 29-year-old Venus chases a coveted sixth Wimbledon singles crown, she recalled how her sister's early mettle made a big impression.
"We were playing in Sydney, I think she was playing (Lindsay) Davenport, who at the time was at least in the top five or maybe higher. We were just coming on tour," Venus told reporters after reaching her eighth singles final at the grasscourt major with victory over top seed Dinara Safina.
"Serena was down 1-6, 2-5... I'll just never forget it. She came back and won that match. It was so intense. I just learned so much from that, her fight," she added. "That actually had a huge impression on my career, that one incident.
"We saved the article. Afterwards I would read it with an Australian accent. We'd read it over and over again, about how she overcame all the odds and won that match... it was a huge lesson for both of us."
Memory of that early match has driven the sisters to win a combined total of 17 grand slam singles titles and both have been ranked number one in the past.
With their head-to-head record standing at 10-10, family bragging rights will also be at stake on Saturday.
The Williamses have certainly been a force to be reckoned with at the All England Club because since 2000 only one women's Wimbledon final has not featured at least one of the sisters and this year has proved no different.
"This is what we dreamed of when we were growing up," 27-year-old Serena told reporters. "This is what we worked for, and this is what we want... it's all come down to this."
As they prepare for combat second seed Serena will be battle weary, having almost stumbled at the last hurdle when she dropped her first set of the fortnight and had to save a match point in a nail-biting semi-final win over Elena Dementieva.
In contrast Venus, who has won 35 consecutive sets dating back to the third round of the 2007 championships, dropped just one game in her crushing semi-final defeat of world number one Safina and remains the favourite to take the title.
Before they can get into the mindset of facing each other as opponents the pair first have to stand side by side as partners, as they warm up for their head-to-head with a doubles semi-final clash against top seeds Cara Black and Liezel Huber on Friday.
But despite their strong doubles partnership and off-court sisterly bond third seed Venus made it clear there would be no let-up in her desire to win when it comes to taking on her sister on U.S. Independence Day.
"I'm happy for her to be in the final but I have to face her and defeat her," said Venus. "I don't like to ever see her disappointed in any way. But at the same time, I don't want to see myself disappointed.
"I need to get my titles, too," added Venus, who is trailing behind her sister in grand slam titles, holding seven to Serena's 10. "I'm still the big sister, but I'm still going to play great tennis."

Federer storms to seventh straight Wimbledon final
LONDON, July 3(Agencies): Roger Federer stands one match away from a record 15th Grand Slam title after snuffing out the challenge of Germany's Tommy Haas 7-6, 7-5, 6-3 to reach the Wimbledon final on Friday.
The five-times champion edged his 31-year-old rival in a display of sheer brilliance before a mesmerised Centre Court crowd, ending the match with a brilliant slam-dunk smash.
By downing Haas in just over two hours, the Swiss became the first man to reach seven successive Wimbledon finals since the abolition of the Challenge Round in 1922.
It did not take him long to turn his thoughts to what will be at stake on Sunday.
"It's unbelievable to be back into another Wimbledon final," said Federer, who shares the record of 14 majors with American Pete Sampras .
"I've had a lot of pressure over the years, so this is just another great opportunity for me to get into the history books.
"It's not the only reason why I'm playing tennis because I love it but going for something that big this coming Sunday it's quite extraordinary."
The rest of Britain will now wait to see if Andy Murray can join Federer in the final as the Scot takes on American sixth seed Andy Roddick in the second semi-final.
Federer did not care who he faces in the showpiece match even though he holds a commanding 18-2 record against Roddick but trails the British third seed 6-2 in career meetings.
"I don't mind. I've had some great matches with Roddick over the years, twice here in the finals which I thought were fantastic," said the 27-year-old, who achieved another milestone on Friday by becoming the first man to reach a record 20th Grand Slam final.
"I have a great record against him so obviously that would be a good thing. He's never to be underestimated with the wonderful serve he has and his great fighting spirit.
"Murray, playing at home, it's special too. I have not that a good record against him but he's really proved he's a contender for Grand Slams and we had a great match at the US Open so either one is fine but I'm happy I'm through."
